Indigenous singer Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu has taken home his first of four possible ARIA gongs, winning the best world music award for his debut solo release.

The blind singer from Elcho Island in north-east Arnhem Land has also been nominated for best male artist, best independent release and album of the year.

Comedian Chris Lilley's cult mockumentary Summer Heights High, which shocked audiences with its drug and disability jokes, has won an ARIA Fine Arts Award.

The soundtrack, which features the complete recordings from the series starring characters Mr G, Ja'mie and Jonah bagged the award for best original soundtrack-cast-show album last night, although Lilley was unable to collect his award in person as he is busy at work on a new project.

The winners of those categories will be announced at the main ARIA Awards ceremony on October 19.

The ARIA Fine Arts Awards were held at the City Recital Hall in Sydney to honour Australian artists in the categories of classical, jazz, world music and soundtrack recordings.
